Word Counter is an application that performs a word count and a character count, but it can do much more. It can be used independently or in conjunction with other applications such as TextEdit, Microsoft Word, Pages, TextWrangler, and others. Word Counter can automatically update the count based on a user-defined time interval. If you want to literally count every word in document, there are many utils available as well as Pages and of course the terminal. I use either Pages or TextWrangler. To count words in a PDF I clipboard from Preview and dump into Pages and count there via 'Inspector'. Word Count 1.2 for Mac can be downloaded from our software library for free.
