Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 Review

Apple is continuously increasing the stability and the security of the Mac OS X. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is a very reliable operating system, providing a lightweight environment with a sleek and user-friendly interface to handle all the user needs. It provides different bug fixes and numerous improvements for AirPort, Address Book, iChat, Clients Management, Mail, Graphics, Printing, Networking and Parental Controls etc. It is a long-awaited release with about 300 features and enhancements.

  • Michael Davis has Leopard running on an 800 MHz G4 iMac with 1 GB of RAM. He installed it from an Intel-based Mac mini using FireWire Disk Mode. Ben Barsh, has Leopard running on his 700 MHz G4 iMac with its original 4200 rpm hard drive and 320 MB of RAM. He says everything works – and he’ll try it on his titanium PowerBook as well.
  • Leopard is the LAST release of Mac OS X for the iMac G4 (though technically, 10.4 Tiger was the last release for the earlier machines). It is also the last Apple operating system for the PowerPC based Mac. As such, it commands a high price to get hold of, but is definitely worth it.
  • The bottom limit for CPU in Leopard is a G4 867 MHz, so Leopard won't install (without either using a trick to accept a slow CPU - or transferring as a complete image). You also would want to make sure the RAM is maxxed out to 1 GB, still not a lot for Leopard.
  • LeopardAssist can help in the process of installing OS X 10.5 Leopard on machines that did not meet the minimum system requirement of an 867MHz or faster processor. It achieves this by temporarily writing a script into the NVRAM of your G4-based Mac.

For Leopard; I've three different Macs with Leopard and the system likes RAM and virtual memory swap space. For temp files used as RAM (write/read to hard drive; dependent on rotational speed of HDD for performance.) Tiger can run better on the original configuration; my iBook G4 12-inch 1.33GHz with 37GB HDD (stock) plus. 1.5GB RAM has slow.

The most important feature of this release is that it does not forces the users for any upgrades. A redesigned Dock is there for the users to get even more comfortable environment. An automated backup utility is there, known as Time Machine to increase data protection. Numerous other enhancements make it a stable operating system for your Macintosh PC.
